The Michigan State Grange urges a no vote on Proposal 06-3. Mourning doves are often referred to as the farmer's friend. These helpful, ground-feeding birds eat pest weed seeds and insects, acting as a natural herbicide. They pose no threat to agricultural crops, homes or anything of value to people. And doves are so small, they're not shot for food.
A new hunting season on mourning doves is unnecessary and serves no wildlife management purpose. Other northern states also have long-standing policies of protecting doves. There are no management problems within those states and no one has suggested that doves are overpopulated.
